The JABA Club men's house consists of 18 men who are somewhere on their early path to recovery. From three days to over a year sober, these men are not only getting sober, but they're learning how to build new lives based on the principles of 12 step recovery. These are men that the world had given up on or forgotten. Most of them came from the streets or very desolate situations. Today we get to watch as they slowly become the men God intended them to be.
Last week, I was talking to some people after a meeting, when a man came to me and asked me for a bed. He had been living on the streets, and had been coming to the 12 step meetings for over a week, but he admitted that he had drank two nights previous. He also had a shopping cart with him with all his belongings, which wasn't much. I let him move in that night, and he's over a week sober now with a sponsor. Every time he shares in our house meetings or our devotion, he talks about how grateful he is to have a bed. I myself can relate, as I was on the streets before I got sober, and I remember waking up from nightmares and clutching the plastic mattress I was sleeping on, just so grateful to still be in the state-run treatment center I got sober in. That's why we do what we do, because we can see versions of ourselves in all these men that come to our door, and we just want them to have the same opportunities that we were given.
